Brunch is whatever you make of it. It doesn’t have to be a party with a group of friends at a restaurant. In fact, it can easily be something you have at home with your immediate family. It can even be a brunch for one if you want it to be.

Here are some ideas to help you kickstart your own stay at home brunch.

Food

After all, brunch is technically a meal. It’s impossible to plan a brunch without planning for food. Luckily, you can put in as much planning as you want to for food.

For those of you who are flying by the seat of your pants:

  • Raid your fridge for leftovers. They should be a microwave-zap away from being ready. Or, if you want, you can add stuff to them to make them even better than before.
  • Create new food combinations with what you do have. You never know when you’ll find the next great pairing. (We like cereal mixed with yogurt ourselves.)
  • Order takeout from your favorite restaurant. You’re not required to have brunch food, so get whatever looks good from their menu.

We have some neat suggestions for the planners too:

  • Overnight oatmeal is delicious and requires just a little planning. Throw everything into a container or jar the night before, and your food will be ready the next morning.
  • Bake or cook a new dish recipe that you’ve discovered. Or bake/cook one of your favorite recipes. Bonus points if you bake in the winter: it’ll warm your house right up!
  • When you do your next grocery trip, pick up something that you’ve always wanted to try but haven’t yet. It could be a food you’ve never had, or a wacky flavor of your favorite snack.
  • Get a sampler pack of food during your next grocery store run. You can have a brunch deciding which is your favorite of the group. (Eugene Lee Yang from the Try Guys leads the way with cereal rankings. )

Entertainment

Brunch doesn’t have to only be about the food. What exactly you choose to do during your brunch time is all up to you.

  • If your inner child wants out, you can use your brunch to recreate your favorite Saturday morning cartoon memories. With the number of streaming services available, chances are you can find your favorite childhood shows to stream.
  • Binge watch that new show everyone in your office is talking about. Or take a chance on something on your queue. Even YouTube videos can lead to a fun, relaxing morning.
  • While many of us don’t need an excuse to pull out our favorite games, we use our brunch time for game time as well. From card games like solitaire to some rounds of Among Us with online strangers, we’re down for some fun.

  • Start a new hobby! While not all hobbies mix well with food and drinks, you’ll enjoy them more if you’re relaxed. And if you’re like us and something goes awry, you’ll be able to laugh it off. Win-win!
  • Cleaning and reorganizing. We know it sounds boring, but hear us out. One, you don’t have to do the big and boring cleaning tasks. But sometimes there are smaller ones that can be a lot of fun. Reorganizing a bookshelf can remind you of all the great books you’ve read. Or go on a treasure hunt to finally find the Missing Lucky Sock. Cleaning your digital space can also be very fun: looking through old pictures of friends and family can be really rewarding.
  • Increase your trivia knowledge. Trivia nights always test your know-how, and being the best means a little bit of studying. Luckily, between entertaining television shows and funny YouTube videos, you can become the smartest person on your team the next time trivia night comes around. And you can learn some very cool facts along the way. Did you know there’s a scientific reason why eggs and bacon go so well together? It’s true! (Find out in SciShow’s video here.)
  • Try listening to a new genre of music. Spotify has some real hidden gems in their large catalogue of music, and just as many wacky playlists for you to search.

An at home spa day can go hand-in-hand with a stay at home brunch.

Things to Keep in Mind

Even with all of the choices above chosen, there are still some important tips for a good stay at home brunch.

  • You can brunch whenever you want to. We really mean whenever, too. If you decide to brunch at midnight, we’re all for it. It should be a time to relax and have fun, not worrying if you slept in or started too soon.
  • It’s not a competition. Sometimes, we see people having photo-ready brunches that we want to recreate. But those photos are only that: photos. Use them to inspire and springboard off of, but don’t make it a competition. All that would do is lead to more stress.
  • Make sure you’re enjoying your brunch. It’s no good if you spend the whole time worrying about something else.

Drinks

Luckily, with Picnic Brunch around, you don’t have to worry about making a mess out of your cocktails. Grab a can or a four pack of our Mimosas and Bloody Marys and you’ll be on your way to a memorable brunch. Click here to find a local store where you can pick them up.
